About MCAT (Medical College Admission Test)

Medical College Admission Test Commonly Known as MCAT is conducted by Association of American Medical colleges (AAMC).

Medical schools in the USA, Australia, Canada and the Caribbean Islands use the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) for admission. Candidates interested to pursue a MD degree in the US or Canada are required to take the standardised MCAT. The test aims to evaluate the candidate’s knowledge, understanding of scientific concepts and principles pursuing education in medicine. Accepted by the health professionals and the graduate schools as an important aspect of the selection process, MCAT is conducted by Association of American Medical colleges (AAMC). The computer-based test, MCAT, evaluates aspirants on four criteria; Biological and Biochemical Foundations of Living Systems; Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems; Psychological, Social, and Biological Foundations of Behavior; and Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills. MCAT is being conducted about more than 20 times throughout the year.

MCAT Eligibility

Candidates aspiring to pursue a career in medicine or related field (health professional) can take the MCAT. The courses which are offered by the health professional institutions and need an MCAT score for admission are:

  • Allopathic
  • Osteopathic
  • Podiatric and
  • Veterinary medicine

Aspirants from countries other than USA and Canada, who have completed or are pursuing their MBBS degrees, are not required to obtain any special permission to register and appear for MCAT.

The degrees offered by the US medical schools are MD degrees. Candidates are, therefore, required to possess an undergraduate degree before they apply to the course. Before they can apply to the medical schools of USA, Aspirants are normally required to have completed the following courses:

  • Biology – One year
  • Physics – One year
  • English – One year
  • Chemistry (through organic chemistry) – Two years

MCAT Registration

The registration for MCAT can only be done online. The process begins by the candidate creating an AAMC account. An AAMC account can be created by appearing the candidate’s personal details like email, full name and gender. That done, the aspirant may next sign in to their accounts using the User ID and password. The same login credentials can also be used to maintain the MCAT account for any other correspondence or getting MCAT related information from AAMC. Once the aspirant submits the online registration form, the candidate will receive an email confirmation which will have the complete details of the exam. Aspirants are recommended to do the MCAT registration at least 60 days before to the chosen exam date.

MCAT Exam Pattern

The duration of MCAT will be a total of around 7.5hrs (approx.). The total actual exam time will be of 6 hours 15 minutes (approx) duration. The computer-based test consists of the following four main sections:

  • Biological and Biochemical Foundations of Living Systems
  • Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems
  • Psychological, Social, and Biological Foundations of Behaviour
  • Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills

 MCAT score

What MCAT score do you need? When considering your MCAT score goal, it’s always a good idea to look at the requirements or minimums (if any) at the schools to which you’re applying. To start, though, here is what you need to know about your MCAT score:

Each of the four sections of MCAT is scored between 118 and 132, with the mean and median at 125. This means the total score ranges from 472 to 528, with the mean and median at 500. Why such odd numbers? The AAMC stresses that this scale emphasizes the importance of the central portion of the score distribution, where most students score (around 125 per section, or 500 total), rather than putting an undue focus on the high end of the scale.
